Singing Pure sounds with Dutch singer May

Dutch Neo-Soul singer May infectiously sings her soul out over strong bass electro beats, creating a sound that captivates every listener. Her debut EP, ‘This Is Pure,’ features three tracks of personal emotional outpouring. The EP also features a remix by German producer FloFilz of her track ‘Soul,’ which is based on a true story.

We chat to May about her latest EP, ‘This Is Pure,’ working on her debut album, and how her distinctive sound became what is it today. Adam Lunn writes.

For those that haven’t heard your music yet, how would you describe your sound?

I would describe my sound as Neo Soul with Electronical elements.

How did ‘This Is Pure’ come about?

I've been in the studio for the last 3 years working on my voice and finding my own sound. In the beginning of 2014 I came to a point where I felt confident enough to put out music. Without a label and without anyone telling me what to do. Very pure.

What inspired your song writing process for the tracks on ‘This Is Pure?’

All of my songs are very personal. Usually I write one sentence down and the rest follows. I wrote Fallin' on a trip to San Francisco. Even though the city was great and I loved being there I had to deal with some personal Issues. 'Soul' is a true story.

Who were your musical influences growing up?

I listened a lot to Morcheeba, Zero7, Aaliyah, N.E.R.D., Michael Jackson, Sade...

Who would be your dream collaboration if you had one?

Hmm. I'd love to work with SBTRKT one day :)

What projects are you currently working on?

I'm currently working on my debut album.

What stimulates your soul?

Music, great conversations and food.
