The Break Down With Undertow

SYS is excited to have a new feature called The Break Down where we interview artists’ and break down their life and music. This week we’re interviewing hip hop artist Undertow. Who just recently returned to the scene with his single ‘On Sight’.

You just dropped 'On Sight' how does it feel to release this single at this time?

I feel the single is something people can relate too, as it was written pre/post Covid outbreak the single will definitely resonate with listeners.

How are you coping with lockdown?

Apart from the boredom of being stuck at home most the time I’m alright. I have a pretty big passion for cooking so our menus get quite elaborate. I try and exercise as much as possible, and drink as less as possible haha that doesn’t always work. As I live in Marrickville though, I’m unable to go surfing which is tough. I can’t complain as I’m able to work, and my girl is great company.

You've been in the scene for a long time - how has the scene in Australia change for hip hop?

I think the scene has changed for the better, I’m loving all the Indigenous artists at the moment hitting the spotlight that’s the best thing about it! There’s so much more variation in  the music now which is only a good thing, and there’s more diverse artists to keep flying the flag.

What else have you got in the works?

I have new music coming with Dj Maniak, various collabs with all different types of artists also. I will be focusing on a range of styles from Drum and Bass to Reggae. Obviously when we’re allowed too I’ll plan to tour again, and have some interesting ideas for a proper live performance.

What stimulates your soul?

I love being on stage, in the ocean and generally eating and drinking with friends. My work at the moment is heavily focused on creating pathways with Indigenous youth which is really fulfilling for me. Passions projects are great, I was running a small thing called Leg-Up in which I was feeding and clothing the homeless on the streets of Sydney which was very rewarding. The fact I can now get involved at that deeper level and change people’s lives means a lot to me.
