Review: Fat Freddy's Drop Tease a Fresh Take on 'Blackbird Returns'

SOUL & WINE
Our favourite bops, paired with delicious drops.

The gloomy winter skyline makes it hard to step foot past the front porch, making adulthood just a smidge harder than it needs to be. There are only two possible options for soothing my inner blues; a vessel of wine and Fat Freddy’s Drop. Music and vino, otherwise known as the OG therapist.

FFD, hailing from Aotearoa (New Zealand) are teasing the upcoming release of ‘Blackbird Returns’, due in our ears on September ‘23. The project is a digi-album offering re-rubs & re-dubs of the original ‘Blackbird’ record, paying homage to its ten year anniversary.

The Freddy’s have been delivering morsels for listeners to nosh on in the lead up to their re-release. So far we’ve been served a remix of Silver & Gold, Mother Mother and Blackbird (featuring New Zealand rapper Kings).

The second single drop, Silver & Gold (remix), is a reproduction that offers an authentic funk vibe with an integration of Nu jazz. This is the kind of record that serves decent dance floor energy but also bodes well while you’re doing your evening dishes. The track has been reinterpreted by Sheffield based Yarni alongside a velvety vocal re-work by Liv East.

Settling into my chilly weekend, I chose to pair this beat with a 2022 Barossa Ink Cabernet Sauvignon. Initially I plonked this in my basket, as the whole cost of living dilemma is grinding on my coin purse. Surprisingly, the flavour complimented the East’s well balanced vocal delivery despite the very low price bracket. The bottle was full bodied and packed with flavour, mellowing my limbic system bounded by the complimentary beat.

2022 Barossa Ink Cabernet Sauvignon. Paired well with Fat Freddy’s Drop on a chilly winter arvo.
