Getting To Know Leo Ruff

With irresistible melodies, we’re excited to interview Leo Ruff who most recently dropped a killer bop called ‘Get Down’. At only 18-years-old, the Producer & DJ from London, UK leans on the brighter side of dance, influenced heavily by Sigala and MK. Like their silky and groovy sound, Leo's music has earned him a warm welcome from both his rapidly expanding fanbase as well as other talents like Tungevaag and EDX, the latter of which played Leo’s track on his radio show. Whilst this is just the beginning for the star, we look forward to seeing more from him. In the meantime we decided to have a chat with him to get to know the artist a little bit more.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Get Down”?

My latest tune ‘Get Down’ is a 90s House and Deep Tech inspired track that is bursting with that heavy dance floor flavour. I used that classic kick drum to drive the track from beginning till end. I wanted to make a heavy summer tune to get people dancing and ready for when we came out of lockdown.

Any news on your next release?

Yes! There is a dance track currently in the works and I think it will really connect with people, especially with COVID hammering us again this winter.

How was the recording and writing process?

I actually made the original version of the tune back in January. It was originally called ‘On it’ but I thought that sounded a bit bland so ended up with ‘Get Down’. This was one of those releases where the creative process worked so well, everything fit together seamlessly. The klaxons & horns are all original and were recorded in the studio to really complete the track. Not sure the neighbours saw it that way!

Starting such a prolific career at such a young age – what would you say has been the biggest challenge and benefits?

I would say the biggest challenge has been trying to grow my brand and get my material onto people’s desks. I’ve only just turned 18 and went into the first lockdown right after my 16th birthday so getting into clubs, DJing and sharing my productions isn’t something I’ve had the chance to do much of. The biggest benefit is probably that I have a lot of free time. I’ve had heaps of time to work on my music and improve my production skills, so I would say that’s made a huge difference.

With the reception your music has gotten – do you feel any pressure on you or rather the opposite?

I would probably say the opposite. I have a few tracks in the works that I thinks could do even better than “Get Down” and after seeing the amazing reception from that track I can’t wait to see the reaction from the stuff I’m working on.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yeah definitely. I make music almost everyday, so I have a pretty big catalogue of massive unreleased tunes that I can’t wait for you to hear.
