Mareshah Brings Back Neo-Soul
Oozing with sweet velvety tones, emerging Melbourne artist Mareshah revives neo-soul in her music. Her latest single ‘Pursuit’ is a perfect example of that whilst channeling in her own identity.
Mareshah’s artistic delivery allows her to connect with her listeners to the point of cognitive convergence. In saying that, her music is beautifully relatable, which is achieved by acknowledging her flaws and taking ownership of her identity. We sit down with Mareshah about making her music accessible to the masses, being born into a musical family and her background with gospel.
You just released a new single, it's inspired by religion, is this something you want people to take away from your music?
My personal connection to this song is my faith but I understand not everyone has a faith so I’ve tried to keep the language and content really accessible for people, with or without a religion.
Are you open to people making their own interpretation of the single?
Absolutely. it’s what I love about my favourite artists; they don’t dumb things down or treat the listener as passive but propose content to the listener in an open way, so the listener can actively engage with the music and create their own understanding and experience of it.
What stimulates your soul?
The realisation that love is transformative and I am deeply loved. The place where these two meet is a place where my full potential is possible.
Who are your inspirations?
My inspirations include, Stevie Wonder, Kimbra, Jill Scott, D’Angelo and Tori Kelly.
What made you want to get into music?
I was born into a musical family, I’ve been singing since I was 7 and always loved it.
Gospel is a big influence in your life, how did it change the style of your music?
To be honest, while it is a big part of my life, not every song I write is painted with the brush of religion or faith. Most my songs focus on my relationships with others or lessons I’ve [usually] learned [the hard way].
How would you describe your sound?
Catchy hooks delivered in a blend of sweet velvety tones and a healthy dose of sass & soul!
